Checkmate Self Defense

As we approach the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the United States, we should all take some time of out our day to remember all of the innocent lives that were lost and all of the families that have been touched by this tragedy. It is during this time that I not only remember all those lost but the heroic acts of our first responders that died trying to save the lives of others. I am also reminded of the amazing acts of courage and heroism performed by the “normal folks” like you and me who became heroes when the situation called for it. From the stories of people on the street who shielded others with their own bodies to protect them from smoke, ash and debris, to the office workers who performed floor to floor searches for absolute strangers that were trapped in the towers, to the passengers that brought down flight 93 over Pennsylvania. On this day I am humbled by strength and courage of the human spirit! Never forget!!

Saturday turned out great! The weather cooperated and we had beautiful sunshine for Certain Victory Firearms Training, Handgun II class at Sig. I think I can say everyone did well and showed improvement since last class, clearly demonstrating what a skilled instructor Senpai Steve is. Pictures to follow on CFVT page.

Also, kudos to Richard for teaching Saturday morning Jujitsu class. Well done Richard, thank you!

Congratulations to Chip on his promotion to Sankyu! Last night Chip was tested for sankyu and made an excellent display of control while blending striking, locking and throws. A performance to be proud of! Congratulations Chip!!!

The Passing of a Martial Arts Icon

 Professor Wally Jay passed away over the Memorial Day weekend at the age of 93.  I met Professor Jay about 25 years ago and have had the opportunity to train and talk with him many times.  Professor Jay’s Small Circle Jujitsu (SCJJ) is an integral part of the Checkmate Jujitsu System.  Professor Jay and my instructor Dave Castoldi met and became friends in the early to mid 70’s.  Shortly after that Professor Jay started incorporating Professor Castoldi’s Weapons defense in the the SCJJ system.  Professor Jay will be missed by so many people!  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Bernice and son Leon.

Congratulations to Allan annd Felicia on earning their yellow belts on Monday 5/23/11! Again I want to commend both of you for the effort you both put in! Over the past several months you both have overcome personal challenges to accomplish this. I look forward to seeing both of you grow as martial artists in the coming months!
