Thursday I checked the dojo mail as usual and much to my surprise, there were “thank you” letters from out troop based at Camp Mike Spann in Afghanistan!
Although we know how much the care packages are appriciated, thank you letters are rarely received as our troops clearly have much higher priorities and much more on their minds. So you can imagine what a surprise it was to see them!
I have them posted on the bulletin board at the dojo. Please take a moment to read them the next time you are in.

I just wanted to give folks a quick heads up regarding our annual Checkmate Martial Arts holiday party. A date has not yet been set but we are looking at January as usual which seems to work best for everyone after the December dust has settled. I will keep you posted both here and on Facebook

Our packages are out!! A HUGE thanks to all of you who donated to this year’s Military Care Package project. It seems that each year it gets bigger and better, it means so much to the troops and none of it would happen without the generosity of Checkmate members, friends and family!! Also, a special thanks to Jess Gilcreast and the McDonough students who provided some great letters of thanks for the troops!
Thanks again!!! -Sensei Leigh
As most of you know, this Sunday, November 20th, a rank test will be conducted at Checkmate Martial Arts. Please try to attend if possible to support your fellow students. Family and friends are, of course, welcome as well. It should be a very eventful day!

Checkmate Martial Arts will be participating in the 2nd annual “Thanks for Giving” event this Sunday, Nov 13th, to benefit New Horizons for New Hampshire. Please see the event page for details. Thanks for Giving
Our Army unit has just posted an update and some more specific requests. As it is getting colder in Afghanistan, they would like thick, warm socks, hand and toe warmers, black knit hats, black ear warmers, funny movies, christmas movies, dorito chips, hightlighters, small pillows, small towels, shower shoes, mini flashlights and little garbage bags. You can view their post and pics by selecting “where unit is from” under the drop down list on left, then “massachusetts” then “SGT Diana Hart”
Thanks in advance, everyone!!!
It snuck up on us this year, its already care package time and the deadline is approaching quickly! Just a brief explanation for the newer folks; each fall, we take a collection for care packages to the troops overseas.
This year, I have been in contact with the father of a former student who is currently stationed in Kabul, Afghanistan. He has assured me that the troops love nothing more than receiving care packages from home.
Lists of requested items are available at the dojo and the deadline is November 10th which gives us very little time. Lets make sure the guys know that we appreciate everything they do!

A big thank you to Danny Dring for last night’s grappling seminar, a good time was had by all. Its always nice to have the opportunity to learn new techniques and see some of the ones you know through someone else’s perspective, giving you a fresh way to see some of the things you’ve been working. We particularly liked working some of his chokes and sneaky choke entries. Good luck to those of you who could not make it!
